PREVENTING WATER WASTE: The Key to Sustainable Water Conservation

Water is a source of life that any living creature cannot live without. Unfortunately, it is also one resource that humans always waste and take for granted. To prevent water loss, water conservation must be practiced.

In order to preserve natural resources and avoid water scarcity, the practice of using water properly and efficiently should be achieved. Due to the factors affecting the water, such as unethical human behavior towards the usage of water. The world is most likely to experience water loss or scarcity. We must value water; therefore, we should practice conservation by reducing water loss and increasing water efficiency.

Conserving water isn't hard. It's all about the little, everyday things. Here are a few tips to help you save more water at home;

  • Turn off the tap when it's not in use

Keeping the water running while brushing your teeth or shaving, wastes about 4-5 gallons of water on average. That's roughly what a family in Africa uses in an entire day. Instead, you could

plug the sink while shaving and turn the faucet off until it's time to wash.

  • Soak your dishes in warm water first

Soaking your dishes is more effective than scraping them in running water. You will save water and a whole lot of effort.

  • Cut those long showers short

There's nothing like a long, hot shower to fire up your grey cells. Or a relaxed bath at the end of a hard day. We get it. But what if you could cut those extra minutes in the shower? Or fill your bath only halfway instead of full? That could help you save not just more water, but time and money from heater bills.

Fix plumbing leaks

If you've done everything, but your water bills are still high, leaky plumbing could be the problem. Keep a close eye on your utility bills. And get your plumbing checked and fixed to reduce water wastage.

  • Reuse water for landscape gardens

Instead of washing your fruits and vegetables in running water, rinse them in a bowl of water. This water is not ideal for drinking or personal use, but you can use it to water your plants. The EPA explains how to recycle and reuse water sustainably.

Using the limited water supply wisely and caring for it properly are just a few of the many keys to conserving water. Remember that we have limited availability of water supply. This means that we do not have an endless amount of water. Remember that we must understand and learn more about water conservation. Even so, find ways to help keep the resources pure and safe for the coming generations.

According to Rappler, last May 16, 2022, water shortages was experienced in key parts of Iloilo City as well as the towns of Leganes, Pavia, and Sta. Barbara. According to Metro Pacific Iloilo Water (MPIW), the reason for this one is that the bulk water suppliers will stop providing water supply as their 10-year agreement as water suppliers will end. In this matter, the authorities announced that there will be water interruptions in selected areas as the water supply will be on a rotational basis. Local residents and businesses were urged to store water in the coming weeks due to the impending low pressure. To address this issue, in a press release, MPIW announced a last-minute deal to extend the existing agreement with FLO Water Resources. The deal eases the water concerns of 20, 000 consumers but comes with a rise in water rates, as agreed on a basic rate of P21 per cubic meter.
